Timbuktu is nestled on the East Shore of 160km long Kootenay Lake in the central Kootenays. BC.
The East Shore is a quiet haven along the lake surrounded by the Purcell Mountains making it a paradise for all nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. An abundance of hiking and mountain bike trails zigzag through the mountains and can be experienced either for the day or longer excursions. Camping is available in many picturesque locations throughout the area. Check out Kokanee Glacier for an excellent hiking destination.
During the summer months the pristine waters of Kootenay Lake become a playground to enjoy for numerous activities such as, boating, canoeing, wakeboarding and water-ski or just spend a relaxing day swimming or on the beach.
During the winter, Whitewater Ski Resort just outside of Nelson is well known for its powder and backcountry skiing/snowboarding.
The Kootenay's are well known for their hot springs, such as Ainsworth Hotsprings, which can be enjoyed any time of the year.
The closest town, Crawford Bay, is famous for its artisan shops as well as for its alternative lifestyle.
Nelson, on the other side of the lake, has become a popular destination for travelers from around the world.
